    Support Local: South African Activewear

This month heralds a full year of living that lockdown life here in South Africa. And for me, a year of spending an inordinate (yet blissfully comfy) amount of time in my stretchy pants. So much so that since my outdoor yoga classes started up again, I hardly have a decent pair of leggings to wear that wouldn’t give my students an unprofessional peek at my underwear! So, I guess it’s high time for a little activewear wardrobe update. In an effort to stick to my resolution to shop local as far as possible, my search has been focused on proudly South African options… of which, the good news is,…

Support local: 12 South African jewellery designers to watch

Since the coronavirus pandemic hit our shores, leading to the announcement of stringent lockdown measures and an almost total shutdown of the economy, many South African small businesses have been struggling to stay afloat. Now, more than ever, it’s crucial to support and buy local. In the light of this, I’ll be doing a series of posts over the next few weeks, featuring my favourite South African makers and brands – from jewellery designers and artists to skincare products and shoes. Two weeks ago, I featured a few artists and illustrators whose work I dream of collecting. This week, I’ll be featuring 12 South African jewellery designers (presented in alphabetical…

How to build a more sustainable wardrobe

For a long time, the fashion industry slipped under the radar for its impact on the environment. I guess everyone was so busy focusing on the way it tends to warp women’s relationship with their bodies and a myriad of other social issues. But then, in 2013, the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh collapsed killing 1138 people. Not just any people. People who worked long hours and got paid less than minimum wage to create garments for fast fashion chains, such as H&M. For the first time since Nike’s sweatshops caused an outcry in the 1990s, the world received a sobering reminder that the clothes we buy with the change…

    Wednesday wish list

Five things that I wish were mine this week: 1. This Rowdy Rucksack with world map print.  2. Rugged, yet feminine lace up boots a little like these. Perfect for wearing with skinny jeans and oversize jerseys, floaty dresses and tights or even soft high-waisted maxi skirts. 3. Pixie hair. I want to try going pixie so, so, so badly, but just a little bit scared. 4. A Sea Wolf album – just discovered their music this week and fell in love. My favourite songs so far are The Garden you Planted and You’re a Wolf. Give them a listen. 5.  A magical, bearded mixture of Adam Brody (as Seth Cohen), Sufjan…

    What’s in your handbag? Nikola

A woman’s mind is as complex as the contents of her handbag; even when you get to the bottom of it, there is ALWAYS something at the bottom to surprise you! – Billy Connelly “Just unpacked my handbag!!! Look what all I found!!!!! All but a baby kitten!! Hahaha!!!” My cousin, Nikola’s, exact words when she sent me this photo. So, I replied: “20 million pens, 8000 lip ices, a selection of miscellaneous mini bags, random tins, vitamins… there MUST be a baby kitten in there somewhere! Have you checked in that little round tin?!” and then decided to post it on the blog, because it was just too darn…

I have a new favourite movie

Or, at least, I think I do. But you know how it goes with new favourite movies… I will probably forget all about it next time someone asks me “what is your favourite movie?” And I will splutter and stutter and umm and aaah… and eventually say it’s a toss-up between Amelie, Moulin Rouge and Pan’s Labyrinth. But, wait! Is this a pattern I see developing before my eyes? Moulin Rouge, Amelie… and now, my latest favourite, Midnight in Paris (NB not to be confused with a certain heiress’ sex tape, please!). Yup, it seems like the city of light and love has been working its irresistible French charm once…
