And just as my heart started sinking for all kinds of silly reasons they came to light with some good advice… as parents always do.
Never give in to the temptation of feeling sorry for yourself, my Mom said, because that won’t make things better.
And my Dad… my Dad gave me a quote that he had heard in the previous Sunday’s sermon: “Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.”
An almost childlike formulation penned by a jovial journalist and writer by the name of G.K. Chesterton. A phrase that has no element of cool. A phrase that will have cynics in fits, fools in stitches and philosophers in pain.
But it’s a phrase that has a simple and perfect ring to it that I have really come to like. And now, every time my lip starts to pout, those very words spring to mind… now that is good advice.
